# How to Add a Single Product

Add products one at a time to build your product portfolio in Simvia. Once a product is added, you can link it to suppliers, use it in requirement rules, and, for packaging, build the structure you need for PPWR.

To add many products at once, see [**Add products in bulk.**](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/knowledge-base/how-to-add-products-in-bulk?hsLang=en)

Choose the right product type

- **SKU:** the finished product you sell to your customers.
- **Ingredient:** a processed input that goes into one of your products, like a dressing, coconut milk, or chocolate chips.
- **Raw material:** an unprocessed input you source, like fresh fruit or bulk flour.
- **Packaging units:** the primary (sales), secondary (grouped) and tertiary (transport) packaging the SKU is placed on the market in
- **Packaging component:** a single item or packaging at any level, like a label or tray, a cardboard box, or a pallet.
- **Packaging base material:** the material used to make a packaging component, like a roll of foil or a sheet of cardboard.

Hover over the info icon next to each type to see its description in the platform.

### Add a product

1. Go to Products
2. Click Add product(s)
3. Hover over Add one
4. Select the product type
5. Select a product from the suggested list, or enter a name to create a flexible product
   ![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-15-2026-09-42-47-7242-AM.png?width=670&height=301&name=image-png-Oct-15-2026-09-42-47-7242-AM.png)
6. Fill in the mandatory fields for this product type
7. Add optional details, such as product tags or an ERP identifier
8. Click Save

The product now appears in the Products overview. Flexible products work the same as predefined products and can be used in requirement rules and supplier connections.

Tip:  Only you can see your ERP identifier, your suppliers can’t. To help suppliers recognise a product, add supplier product identifiers after you link the product to a supplier.

### Mandatory fields per product type

Some product types need extra information before you can save them.

**Packaging unit**

- **Name:** the name of the packaging unit, for example “Tray 250 g” or “Shipper case 12x”.
- **Packaging format:** how the unit is used on the market. Choose one of these:
    - **Primary production:** packaging for unprocessed products straight from the farm, sea or field, like loose fruit in field crates, bulk grain bags or fish boxes at harvest.
    - **Sales:** the unit the consumer buys, like a bottle, pot, box or bag. Also called primary packaging.
    - **Service / take-away:** packaging filled at the point of sale, like coffee cups, takeaway containers or sandwich bags.
    - **Grouped:** packaging that groups several sales units together, like multipacks, restocking cases or distribution trays. You can remove it without affecting the product. Also called secondary packaging.
    - **Sales packaging for transport:** sales packaging that also works as transport packaging, like drums of sauce or boxes of bananas.
    - **Transport:** packaging that makes handling and transport easier, like pallets, stretch wrap or corrugated outer boxes. Also called tertiary packaging.
    - **E-commerce:** transport packaging used for online or distance sales directly to the end user.

Hover over the info icon next to each format to see its description in the platform.

You can also fill in these optional fields when you add a packaging unit:

- **Product tags**
- **ERP identifier**
- **GTIN**
- **My role:** your role for this unit under PPWR (Manufacturer, Distributor, Importer, Supplier or Authorised representative)

**![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-12-14-7865-PM.png?width=670&height=300&name=image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-12-14-7865-PM.png)**

**Tip:** You don’t have to select your role when you add the unit, but you need it to issue a Declaration of Conformity. Adding it now saves you a step later.

### Complete your product setup

What you do next depends on the product type you added.

#### Packaging component: assign a supplier

Your supplier provides the material data for each component, like PFAS and heavy metals information. To request this data, link the component to its supplier.

1. Open the packaging component
2. Go to the **Supply Chain** tab
3. Click **Add organisations**
4. Select the supplier of this component
5. Click \[Save\]
6. Add the supplier product identifier, so the supplier recognises which component you mean

   ![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-16-02-5344-PM.png?width=670&height=188&name=image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-16-02-5344-PM.png)

### Packaging unit: build the hierarchy

A packaging unit is made up of components, like a tray, a film and a label. Add these components to the unit so Simvia knows what the unit consists of.

1. Open the packaging unit
2. Go to the \[Packaging structure\] tab
   ![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-17-40-0118-PM.png?width=670&height=195&name=image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-17-40-0118-PM.png)
3. Click \[Add component\]
4. Select an existing component, or create a new one
5. Repeat for every component in the unit
6. Click "Create hierarchy

   ![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-18-36-1558-PM.png?width=670&height=270&name=image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-18-36-1558-PM.png)

### SKU: link units or a supplier

How you complete an SKU depends on your role.

- **Manufacturer:** you pack the product yourself, so you add the packaging units that make up this SKU.
    1. Open the SKU
    2. Go to the Hierarchy tab
    3. Click "Add unit"
    4. Select the sales, grouped and transport units used for this SKU
    5. Click "Create hiearchy"

       ![](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-26-25-8628-PM.png?width=670&height=298&name=image-png-Oct-19-2026-02-26-25-8628-PM.png)
- **Distributor or importer:** your supplier packs the product, so you collect the packaging data from them. Assign the supplier to the SKU.
    1. Open the SKU
    2. Go to the **Supply Chain** tab
    3. Click **Add organisations**
    4. Select the supplier of this SKU
    5. Click "Save"
