# How to Add Products in Bulk
Add or update many products at once with an Excel template, instead of one by one. You can create SKUs, ingredients, raw materials and packaging in one upload, link them to your suppliers, and build your product hierarchy.
The template also includes your existing products, so you can use it to update your portfolio in bulk.

### Before you start
- Always download a new template from the platform. It includes your current products and the latest fields.
- Have your product list ready, including the product type of each product. See **[Understanding Products](https://helpcenter.simvia.com/knowledge-base/understanding-products?hsLang=en).**
- Use the dropdowns in the template wherever they're available. Don't type your own text in those columns.
**Download the template**
1. Go to **Products**
2. Click **Add product(s)**
3. Click **Add in bulk**
4. Select **Set up products & hierarchy**
5. Click the Excel file to download the template

Fill in the template
Fill in the sheets in this order.
### 1. Create products
Add one row per product. This sheet is for every product type except packaging units, which have their own sheet.
- **UUID:** leave this blank for a new product. Keep the existing UUID to update a product.
- **Product name** and **Product type:** required for every product.
- **ERP identifier:** your internal product code. Only visible to you.
- **My role:** your role for the product. Only fill this in for SKUs.
- **Supplier #1 to #3:** the suppliers of the product, each with up to two supplier product IDs.
- **Tags**, **Status** (Active or Inactive) and **Description:** optional.
**Note:** The supplier numbering is only for reference. Supplier #1 isn't the main supplier, and the order doesn't reflect your supply chain.
### 2. Create packaging units
Add one row per packaging unit.
- **Packaging unit name**, **Packaging ID** and **Packaging unit description:** how the unit is identified.
- **Packaging unit format:** for example Sales, Grouped or Transport.
- **My role**, **Suppliers**, **Tags** and **Status:** the same as on the Create products sheet.
- **Component 1 to 4 name and quantity:** the components in the unit and how many of each. The quantity is 1 if you leave it blank.
**Tip:** Add your packaging components on the Create products sheet first. The component names on this sheet must match exactly.
### 3. Set SKU - packaging unit links
Link each SKU to its packaging units to build the hierarchy.
- **SKU:** the product you sell.
- **Packaging unit - inner** and **Packaging unit - outer:** the unit and the unit it fits into, for example a sales unit inside a grouped unit.
- **Quantity (inner per outer):** how many inner units fit into the outer unit. Leave this blank for the highest level, usually transport.
- **Final unit:** marks the highest packaging level.
### 4. Set SKU, ingredient & RM links
Link ingredients and raw materials to your SKUs, and raw materials to ingredients. Add one row per link. To link several items, repeat the SKU or ingredient on multiple rows.
Upload the template
1. Save the completed Excel file
2. Go back to **Add in bulk** \> **Set up products & hierarchy**
3. Drag the file into the upload area, or click **Browse your files**
**Note:** Zip files are not supported.
#### Fix errors in your file
If something in your file needs fixing, a red alert appears when you upload it.
1. Click the red **Download** button to download your file with the errors
2. Find the cells highlighted in red, and correct them
3. Save the file and upload it again
**Update existing products**
1. Download a new template
2. Change the details in the rows of the products you want to update. Keep their UUID.
3. Upload the file
**Warning:** If you upload an SKU with a changed hierarchy, any packaging units, ingredients or raw materials that no longer belong to it are unlinked from the SKU. They stay in your product portfolio.
